Installation and maintenance of the Port-A-Cool® evaporative cooler

Installation of the PORT-A-COOL® unit

The PORT-A-COOL® evaporative is very easy to install, below we explain the measurement you have to take before you can enjoy the coolness of the PORT-A-COOL® evaporative cooler.

Unpacking the PORT-A-COOL® unit
The standard Cyclone, JetStream, 24”, 36” and 48” models are shipped completely assembled and sitting on a plastic pallet with a large cover box strapped over the PORT-A-COOL® unit. The 16” model PORT-A-COOL® units are shipped in an enclosed corrugated box and need only to be removed from the box.

Connecting the water and electricity
Water can be provided by a watertank (16” model or extra tank) or via the traditional water connection. An European garden hose (exclusive with the PORT-A-COOL®) can be connected constantly to the water connection, water will not enter when the tank is full. Or the machines work several hours on the water inside of the tank. All PORT-A-COOL®s are foreseen of 220volt and CE for the European market.

Placement of the PORT-A-COOL® unit

PORT-A-COOL® unit should be used in well-ventilated areas only.
There are three primary considerations when decidiing where to place the PORT-A-COOL ® unit.
1. Fresh Air Supply – The inlet side of the PORT-A-COOL® unit (pad side) must be placed so as to insure that a smooth, uninterrupted supply of fresh air is available.
2. Air Pattem – The cool air discharged from (fan side) the PORT-A-COOL® unit should have a clear area in which to circulate, being as free of obstructions possible
3. Ventilation (Exhaust) – There should be a defined place in which the air from the PORT-A-COOL® unit can be exhausted from the area being cooled. This is to prevent the PORT-A-COOL® unit from recirculating air that has already been through the cooling process.

Filling with water
Once the sump tank is full, the float valve will shut off the supply flow. On the 16” filler cart model fill the 80 liter tank reservoir referring to the sight glass on the front of the reservoir for filling amounts. When turning on the pump, the supply of water flow will be restarted. The new JetStream 1600 and 2400 have a tank of 153 and 186 liter, this guarantees the use of the cooler for at least 10 hours without the need to refill the water tank.
Once the sump tank is full, moving the pump swith on the ´ON´ position will turn on the pump. The water will be wetting the cooling pads.

Starting the fan
Starting the fan is as simple as turning on the switch on the desired speed and level of cooling. It is preferred to step slowly to the maximum speed of the machine. When turning off the fan, the pump should be turned off about 15 minutes before the fan, to allow the cooling pads to dry. This will increase the life of the pads.

Maintenance & storage

a. Daily maintenance
Daily maintenance is really more an oprational consideration than actual maintenance. On a daily basis, the pump should be turned off approximately 15 minutes before the fan is turned off.

b. Weekly maintenance
Once a week it is recommended to shut down the machine to drain the sump tank. Closing the Spray Bar Adjustment Valve and opening the Drain Valve accomplish this. A hose can be attached to the Drain Valve to direct the drained water to a remote disposal area. Once the Drain Valve is open, starting the pump will drain the unit. In a dusty environment the dirt and any remaining water may be vacuumed out ousing a wet/dry shop vacuum and wiped clean with a cloth.

c. Storage
Storage of the PORT-A-COOL® unit is very simple.
1. Drain all the water from the sump tank and clean as above, ensuring that the pads and sump are completely dry.
2. Roll up the electrical power cord and secure it to ensure that it will not be rolled over, tripped over or caught in equipment
3. Cover the PORT-A-COOL® unit completely to prevent dust build-up and store in a dry area.

    Environmental-friendly cooling: Port-A-Cool evaporative cooling

The world is becoming more sensitive to the term “green” and what it means to our environment and the health of our planet. Many companies are rushing to redefine their products and business practices to “go green”. Some companies, however, have always been green without even trying to be politically correct. It was just the right thing to do. Port-A-Cool, LLC, is one of those companies.

For example, the flagship product for the company is the Port-A-Cool® portable evaporative cooling unit, manufactured in Center, Texas. The unit features a one-piece, rotationally molded plastic housing which is leak and rust proof and produced at the company’s manufacturing facility. The company recycles all scrap plastic from the manufacture of the units, reducing waste and harm to our environment.

In addition, the unit itself uses a cooling method that is environmentally friendly. The ancient Egyptians used the same principles of evaporative cooling to cool their homes by hanging a damp mat in the doorway and allowing the wind to evaporative the water and provide cooling. Port-A-Cool® units utilize the same natural cooling methods, but have implemented state-of-the-art technology to perfect the process, always keeping in mind the company’s commitment to preserving our environment. Port-A-Cool® units use less than a dollar a day in resources to provide air an average of 7-15 degrees celsius cooler than surrounding air. Because the Port-A-Cool® unit uses a natural cooling process, no harmful greenhouse gases, like CO2 expelled from traditional air conditioning systems, are released into the air to harm our ozone layer.

An environmentally friendly process for cooling, coupled with being “green” before “green” was cool. That has always been the “natural” choice for Port-A-Cool, LLC.

Evaporative cooling: An Ancient Technique for a High Tech Society

Remember the chill after swimming on a hot, dry day, then getting out of the water and feeling the wind hitting your wet skin? Or simply try dipping your finger in a glass of water, then blowing air across your finger and feeling the cool sensation as the water evaporates. That's evaporative cooling.

Try the same thing when there is no wind or no air moving. The surrounding air is quickly saturated with moisture, there is no evaporation and the cooling effect is gone.

Evaporative cooling units create this naturally occurring process and provide a constant flow of cool, refreshing air into a hot, uncomfortable environment.

    HOW DOES EVAPORATIVE COOLING WORK?

The heart of an evaporative cooling system is the pad where the water evaporates and the air passing through the pads is cooled.

Evaporative cooling pads, like Kuul pads, are manufactured of fluted cellulose sheets that are glued together. This material is chemically impregnated with special compounds to prevent rot and ensure a long service life.

A special water distribution system spreads water over the surface of the pad, ensuring a uniform supply of water to keep the entire air contact surface thoroughly wetted."

Fans create a negative pressure, causing air to be drawn through the pads.

Evaporation results from contact between air and water. A control system operates the water pump and the fan distributes the cool air.

The relative humidity is lowest in the afternoon when the temperature is at its highest. And the lower the humidity, the better the evaporative cooling effect. In other words, the cooling effect is best when you need it the most.

EVAPORATIVE COOLING VS TRADITIONAL AIR CONDITIONING

Evaporative coolers and central air conditioners both serve the same important purpose: keeping us cool. But these two systems operate very differently. Understanding the difference can help get the most out of any system and minimize wasted energy.

Evaporative coolers cool air by filtering it through water, thus lowering the air’s temperature. Evaporative coolers produce humid air because the air absorbs water during the cooling process. These systems work best when a small amount of outside air circulates into the space where the evaporative cooler is employed. This also introduces fresh air into the environment and reduces the risk of poor indoor air quality.

Central air conditioners, on the other hand, work by taking humidity out of the home. These systems produce cold, dry air and work best in an airtight home.

The major advantage of an evaporative cooler is that its operating costs are typically one-third those of a central air conditioner. The initial equipment cost is also lower than air conditioners. Along with lower operating costs and simple installation, evaporative cooling can be a perfect, ozone-friendly alternative to traditional air conditioning.

IS EVAPORATIVE COOLING GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT?

Refrigerated cooling makes the air dry and uses refrigerants, which may harm the environment. Evaporative cooling, however, is based on a totally natural process of air cooled by water which means it won’t dry out the air, irritate your skin, throat or eyes, or affect the environment.

Evaporative cooling is the healthiest way to cool because it replaces stale air with clean, fresh air many times an hour — remember, you keep your doors and windows open. The air is never re-circulated which means smells and airborne germs are expelled.

WILL AN EVAPORATIVE COOLER SAVE ME MONEY?

Evaporative cooling is also up to 50% cheaper to install and three times cheaper to run than refrigerated cooling. Typically, the cost for water and electricity for a 36in unit for eight hours of operation is less than €1.00. Smaller units will operate for longer periods for the same amount of money.

That's approximately three times cheaper than traditional air conditioning.

    EVAPORATIVE COOLING AND HEAT STRESS

Heat stress can occur in people, animals and even equipment. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other agencies, employees required to work in high temperature environments should be allowed frequent breaks in a cool place to avoid symptoms of heat stress including nausea, dizziness, cramps, confusion, unconsciousness, seizure and even death. High temperature environments are generally referred to as those over 30°C for light work, over 27°C for moderate work and over 25°C for heavy work.

According to the "Journal of Dairy Science", across all animal classes, the estimated national annual losses to heat stress are estimated at US$2.4 billion. In cattle, heat stress reduces fertility and milk production in cows and can cause udder infections and even mortality during the hot summer months. Heat stress is also to blame for a high percentage of piglet and poultry mortality.

Evaporative cooling units, like Port-A-Cool, can lower the ambient temperature 7 to 12°C, turning a restrictive 32°C area into a comfortable 21°C area.

Avoid Heat Stress this Summer: use biocooling solutions

With summer temperatures steadily climbing into triple digits, the potential for heat stroke becomes a real concern for those exposed to high temperature environments.

“High Temperature Environments” are generally referred to as those over 30˚C for light work, over 27˚C for moderate work and over 24˚C for heavy work. This amount requires 25% rest time for every 75% of work time, according to OSHA, with additional rest times for higher temperature environments. For example, work place temperatures over 30˚C require 75% rest time for every 25% of work time when a worker is producing a heavy workload.

According to the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the U.S. Department of Health, and the University of Michigan, employees required to work in high temperature environments should be allowed to take frequent breaks in a cool place.

According to OSHA “rest period” recommendations, if a staff of 100 workers takes ONE additional 10-minute rest period per day, the cost to the company will be 16 hours and 40 minutes in lost production time per day or 83 hours and 20 minutes per week. In terms of euros, at €18 per hour pay rate, excluding overtime and including benefits, the cost to the company will be €1,500 per week or €19,500 over the course of a 13-week summer. That is for ONE 10-MINUTE REST PERIOD PER DAY PER 100 WORKERS!
According to these same organizations, high temperature work environments can lead to a variety of heat-illnesses including: heat stroke, heat stress, heat strain, heat collapse, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heat fatigue and heat rash.

Also according to these groups, if frequent breaks are not taken, workers are at risk of physical symptoms such as nausea, headaches, dizziness, cramps, confusion, unconsciousness, seizure and even death. Mentally, workers can become drowsy, unfocused, moody, and the effects of heat stress have been shown to contribute to accidents, work slowdowns and walkouts, according to the Southwest Michigan Coalition on Safety and Health.

All these groups recommend ventilation as a preventative and some specifically recommend evaporative cooling where available, citing the inefficiency and high cost of installing and operating central air conditioning and the additional benefit of portable evaporative cooling and the ability to direct spot cooling where desired.

Port-A-Cool® portable evaporative cooling units provide fresh cool air and require nothing but tap water and 220v of electricity to operate. Evaporative cooling has also been proven to improve indoor air quality because of the introduction of fresh air and moisture that the unit produces. The energy costs are also lowered by as much as 3/4th when utilizing evaporative cooling.

For providing 100% fresh, cool air for warehouse or shop employees, kennels, poultry houses, gymnasiums, or during outdoor activities, Port-A-Cool® units are the only choice.
